  1. Sam Darnold is expected to miss Seattle's Week 2 game against Arizona because of the hip injury he suffered in the season opener, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said further testing brought encouraging results, although he did not set a return date.

In a Thursday update published by the Seahawks, Macdonald said the hip was intact and described the problem as muscular. The team had already ruled out a fracture after Wednesday's game. He also said Darnold remained in pain.

Macdonald said he was preparing mentally for Drew Lock to play against the Cardinals, while making clear that he had not been given a final decision on Darnold's availability. That distinction matters: the coach's preparation and the reported expectation of a missed game do not establish a firm recovery schedule.

NFL Network's report said Darnold appeared to have avoided a lengthy absence, though he could miss a few weeks. There is no confirmed return game.

Darnold left Wednesday's opener after five plays, having hurt his hip on a sack. Lock took over and helped Seattle beat New England 13-10. The Seahawks now prepare for Arizona with Lock as the likely replacement while Darnold's recovery is assessed.
