The Yankees did not need to come from behind to win this one. Luis García Jr. put them ahead in the first inning with a two-run homer, his 30th of the season. After Kyle Karros answered with a solo shot for Colorado, Volpe drove in Ryan McMahon with a second-inning single. Cody Bellinger’s sacrifice fly made it 4–1.
Colorado narrowed the margin in the seventh when Jake McCarthy tripled home Ezequiel Tovar. That left the Yankees protecting a two-run lead before their offense broke the game open in the bottom half.
Spencer Jones delivered the first major blow of that rally, driving in Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez with a two-run single. Volpe then supplied the four-run finish. His earlier RBI single meant he was responsible for half of New York’s runs by the end of the night.
The Yankees finished with 11 hits, compared with Colorado’s eight. The Rockies left 11 runners on base, including three in the ninth, and could not turn their late opportunities into a serious threat.
Jones matched Volpe with three hits in four at-bats, while Bellinger doubled twice. Together, Volpe and Jones supplied six of New York’s 11 hits and seven of its 10 RBIs. McMahon scored twice, and García’s first-inning homer accounted for the other two runs driven in by a Yankees hitter besides Bellinger.
New York needed six pitchers to finish the game. Max Fried struck out seven in 3⅓ innings but allowed one run and walked two. The relievers covered the remaining 5⅔ innings, with Luis Gil recording the final six outs. Colorado starter Ryan Feltner allowed four runs in five innings.
Volpe also played second base in his return to the major-league lineup, a change highlighted in the Yankees’ official report. One game cannot settle his role for the rest of September. It did give New York an immediate contribution from a player trying to make the most of another opportunity.
