US Open Qualifying Has a Main-Draw Resume Problem

US Open qualifying began Aug. 24 with a women's field that includes 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. Those resumes would normally define a main-draw feature. Here they begin outside it.

The field reflects how quickly ranking position can change through injury, form and limited schedules. A major trophy proves a player reached the sport's highest level. It does not reserve a place years later when the entry list closes.

Qualifying also creates a different competitive demand. Players must win through a short, high-pressure sequence before the two-week tournament starts, then recover quickly enough to face a rested main-draw opponent.

Live results must govern the next version of each story, but the starting list already makes one point clear: women's tennis has enough accomplished depth to turn qualifying into a serious event. The main draw will include players who had to beat champions just to enter it.
