The NHL's 84-Game Era Changes More Than the Count

The NHL's 2026-27 regular season begins Sept. 29 with each club scheduled for 84 games, 42 at home and 42 away. The full league calendar reaches a record 1,344 games.

The expansion adds 32 games of total inventory compared with an 82-game schedule. That creates more local dates and broadcast windows, but it also adds travel and recovery demands before a postseason that already rewards health.

The league is also using Monday matinees designed for European prime time. Those windows show how schedule growth can support audience strategy rather than simply repeat the same North American evening slot.

The new collective bargaining agreement takes effect Sept. 16 and runs through 2030, giving the league labor stability as the schedule changes. The season will show whether two more games feel like useful inventory or another small tax collected across six months.
