Malik Hooker has forearm fracture; Cowboys await specialist’s recovery assessment

Malik Hooker has a fractured bone in his forearm and is consulting a hand specialist to establish a recovery timeline, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday. The update gives Dallas a firmer diagnosis after Sunday night’s loss to the Giants, but no settled answer on how long the veteran safety will be unavailable.

Rapoport said the Cowboys hope the particular fracture will permit a quicker return than some other forearm breaks. The recovery timetable remains open.

From an X-ray concern to a reported fracture

Brian Schottenheimer had raised the possibility of a fracture in his postgame news conference. The Cowboys coach said the initial X-rays suggested that Hooker might have fractured his forearm and that further testing would follow Monday.

Dallas’ official account places the injury in the third quarter, after a collision with a Giants blocker. Hooker went to the locker room for X-rays before the game ended.

Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown also left the game with a hamstring injury. Schottenheimer said afterward that its severity was not yet known. Overshown’s status remains unresolved.

More work for a defense already correcting mistakes

The injuries add uncertainty to Christian Parker’s defense following a 28–20 defeat. Dallas allowed 394 yards in Parker’s first regular-season game as defensive coordinator, according to the team’s Monday review, and now faces Washington in its home opener.

Schottenheimer’s postgame criticism went beyond the injury list. He pointed to coverage mistakes, insufficient pressure and failures to contain an athletic quarterback. He also said the performance did not match what the coaching staff had seen in practice.

The coach accepted responsibility for corrections that had not happened during the game. His message to Parker was to learn from the opener without allowing it to determine the following week’s preparation.

That work now runs alongside the medical evaluations. Dallas needs to improve its execution while determining which defenders can take part against another division opponent. Monday’s updates left Hooker’s replacement and Overshown’s game status unsettled.

The specialist’s assessment will help Dallas plan for Hooker’s absence. His prognosis is the next question for a defense trying to recover from a difficult opener.
